There’s no argument that social media is crucial to a business these days, especially given the fact that nearly everyone is online these days and of those people over 70% use social media. Unfortunately where companies fall short is knowing how to properly strategize for it, luckily we’re masters of the art and with great power comes great responsibility and so it’s our duty to let you know the rules that come with good social media marketing skillz.
You’re a Human Being
As much as a godsend bots can be, they can also be a pain in the ass; besides, for as far as we move into the future, people still prefer talking to people. So rule number one, is BE YOURSELF (insert rainbow emoji) The goal of social media is to engage and at the end of the day, companies can’t be your friend, but people at those companies can. Your audience will appreciate someone who relates to them, is personable and speaks on their level. Which brings us to our next point.
It’s Called Social Media
So socialize! While it’s great to promote yourself on these platforms, it’s also equally important, if not more so, to actually engage with your audience, or at least attempt to. No one logs on thinking “I hope I see some great ads today!” (unless you’re us, but that’s besides the point), the goal is to interact and gain some understanding. Social media is a great tool to get to know your audience with; respond to them, figure out what they want and need and don’t talk about yourself incessantly, no one likes that guy and let’s face it, just like Kanye West, deep down you do want to be liked.
All of the Community Love (But Sadly None of the Potlucks)
First and foremost, social media platforms are a community, so like in any other community you want to get to know your neighbors. Reach out to other local businesses and initiate a conversation but remember that there is a fine line between starting a conversation and coming across as pushy. When you reach out to potential partners or clients, it doesn’t mean you necessarily have to advertise yourself. Tying into the previous point, the goal is to socialize so whether that’s offering up congratulations or responding to their own posts, the idea is to draw up a new community of friends and subsequently spread awareness of your brand.
Compartmentalize
Each platform has their own strengths and weaknesses and they all bring something different to the table, so it stands to reason that they should each be used to the best of their ability. Of course most of your posts would likely hit up more than one platform at a time but depending on the content, it’s important to consider the best options for the job.
Put a Stopper in it
Don’t clog the feed! Sad to admit, the world unfortunately does not revolve around you and posting too much can be detrimental to your cause. Though you do want to post consistently, over-posting and clogging the feed will only annoy your audience and you may lose them because of it. So spread it out and remember: less is more.
Content is (Still) King
Last but not least is this old familiar phrase and yes, it still rings true. At the end of the day, the most successful social media marketing comes from those who have compelling content. Having “interesting content” is one of the top three reasons why people choose to follow brands; but gaining followers is only half the battle, the other half is actually keeping them. By sticking to these 6 simple rules, you’ll be well on your way to building a following, creating awareness of your brand and becoming a social media marketing guru like your friends at talonX. And as always, when the going gets tough, we’re just a call away!
